Pet and Animal Portraits

I am Karen Johnson, an artist based in the World Heritage village of Saltaire in the UK.  For the last two years I have been producing commissions of loved pets and wild animals for clients in the UK and internationally. My aim is to bring a life-like representation which not only looks like, but echoes each animal’s personality.

Each portrait is produced using only the highest quality coloured pencils, pastels and papers, ensuring your artwork lasts a lifetime.

Before starting any commission, I will discuss what you want from the portrait with you. Hearing from you about your animal helps me to get to know them and bring their personality to the piece. So that your portrait truly captures them, I'll ask you to provide a preferred image, and if available, a range of photos showing them in their favourite activities can also help to bring the drawing to life.

I find wild animals especially enjoyable to draw, the leopard’s eye is one of my all-time favourite creations.

Happy customers

After seeing examples of Karen’s work, I commissioned her to draw a tiger for my daughter’s birthday. She took great care to understand exactly what I wanted and not only delivered, but exceeded my expectations. Even having proofed a photo of the finished piece, I was amazed when I saw it in person. It is absolutely stunning. You feel like you can reach out and feel the texture of its fur.
My daughter was even more thrilled than I’d hoped for, and I cannot recommend Karen and her work highly enough.
